Wi-Fi RFID Tag Market Grows Rapidly

Wi-Fi RFID tag market will grow more than 100% per year through 2010.

Despite some hurdles to overcome, Wi-Fi RFID tag shipments will grow at over 100% annually through 2010, reports In-Stat. The technology is attractive because Wi-Fi RFID allows businesses to leverage their existing Wi-Fi investments for asset tracking, the high-tech market research firm says.

"Historically, one of the key weaknesses of this market has been the short battery life of asset tags," says Daryl Schoolar, In-Stat analyst.  "G2 MicorSystems, the only tag-specific chip vendor, has made strides in overcoming this weakness, with multi-year battery life now a reality."

-2006 worldwide Wi-Fi RFID tag shipments reached 135,000.

-Key verticals for growth will be healthcare, heavy manufacturing, transportation, and logistics.
