INTERVIEW

ADT started as American District Telegraph (ADT) 130 years ago when people just started to communicate with one another using electronic devices.  In those days, emergency or security information was transferred between people and companies through telegraph.  Increasingly, more people were using telegraph to inform one anther on urgent matters using ADT service.  As the company evolved with the history, naturally through over 100 years of development, ADT has, now, become the largest electronic security service provider in the world using the latest communication technology.  As one of participation in company’s accomplishment, Robert Zhu, President of ADT Security, Asia Pacific, speaks about ADT’s success factors and its vision in this interview with Amanda Kim, Editor of SecurityWorld INT’L.

You have a glorious history of more than 130 years in providing security solutions.  What makes it possible for ADT Security to maintain its leading position regardless of its newly-formed competitors?

Having a long history does’t mean a company can compete competitively in modern days.  Innovations and listening to customers’ needs have been the keys to making ADT’s business successful for so long.

It started with the innovation of electronic article surveillance solutions.  For the first time, customers were allowed to touch and feel the products in the shop. However, they soon discovered a problem of shoplifting.  ADT Sensormatic was the pioneer in this area, providing a solution to reduce the shoplifting by introducing innovative security systems.  This concept was quickly adopted by retailers resulting a dominant position for ADT in majority of the markets in retail business.  Through the years, others copied the technology and started to join the race, ADT continues to innovate and introduce more reliable security systems to maintain its leading position.

As business progresses, the company’s philosophy of improving customer service and listening to the voice of customers has been deeply rooted in its business culture.  ADT continues to change its service offerings to address the fast-changing needs of its customers and that is why the company survives for so long.

What inspires you when it comes to customer service?

We are here because our customers need us.  I’m greatly inspired when I learn that our products, services and/or total solutions meet our customers’ needs, and thus, they have become more secure in their homes and/or businesses.  Winning the hearts and minds of satisfied customers with exceptional solutions and exceeding their expectations are our goals.

What has been the biggest achievement of ADT Security so far in terms of contributing to security industry?

The biggest achievement has to be our 24-hour alarm monitoring service.  Many security providers may have now joined in the race to offer this service. But ADT pioneered the alarm monitoring service.  We continue to be the choice of the security provider for many customers around the world.

What most people have is just a stand-alone alarm system.  But what if the alarm goes off and intrusion happens?  That’s when ADT comes in.  Users can install an alarm monitoring device at homes, offices, factories or any other areas that need the protection from unwanted intrusion.  We can connect all alarm systems through the telephone lines, Internet or even wirelessly to ADT’s 24/7 alarm monitoring centers.  And we will respond to the alarm immediately.

As a security specialist business, please tip us off on how we can reduce threats in everyday life.

Security is everyone’s responsibility.  The first step towards reducing threats is to assess the environment and uncover all security risks and challenges.  Secondly, introduce the appropriate security solutions to minimize the risks and address the challenges, whether its retail, commercial, industrial, governmental or residential.  My advice is to start with basic security systems and add on new loss prevention initiatives over the years.  This means customers should select products that allow for easy integration with new systems.  It’s certainly a smart way to ensure they build onto their existing investment.
