Have A Peaceful Vacation Away from Home

A few simple precautions regarding the security of your home for a worry-free holiday

Travel agents and transportation authorities are predicting that over 39 percent of Americans will take a vacation this year. Travelers who take the essential steps needed to secure the safety of their homes before their departure will have greater peace of mind during their trip. This translates into a more relaxed and enjoyable vacation.

Before Leaving Town

The first thing homeowners should do before leaving town is to make certain that their home does not appear empty.  This will help deter burglars by giving the impression that home is not vacant and discourage any potential break-in attempts.  Measures to take include placing the interior lights on an automatic timer so that the home looks occupied and halting mail and newspaper service.  An answering machine message should give no indication that the homeowners are away and valuables should not be left in plain sight in front of windows.

Exterior Security

Increasing the exterior security of the home will prevent access to the property.  Travelers can protect entrances to the backyard with a heavy padlock making it difficult for burglars to exit the property with large, expensive electronic equipment.  Garage doors and the interior door leading from the garage to the house should be locked.  Leaving a parked car in the driveway also gives the appearance that the home is occupied.  Installing a responsive home security system is also recommended.  If an intruder does enter the home, the security system will contact help immediately.

Outside Help

Travelers can also utilize the assistance of neighbors and community members.  Recruiting trustworthy neighbors to visit the home every few days will verify that it is protected.  Neighbors who are recruited should be supplied with a copy of the homeowners¡¯ trip itinerary along with the appropriate contact numbers in case there is an emergency.  Furthermore, travelers may consider contacting the local police department and request officers to patrol the neighborhood frequently during the length of the vacation.

Summer vacation should be a fun and exciting trip with friends and family.  By taking a few simple precautions regarding the security of your home, a worry-free holiday will be enjoyed by all.
