ANTI-THEFT TECHNIQUES

Remembering to lock the doors, leaving valuables out of sight, and parking in well-lit areas are just some of the simple precautionary measures auto owners can take.  To make it more difficult for a potential thief to tow your vehicle, drivers can turn their wheels against the curb when they park.  Car registration and insurance information should be kept with the owner, instead of in the car.  If the vehicle is pulled over by police, they will suspect a theft if the information is missing.

VIN ETCHING

Another easy way to deter theft is to get VIN etching on your car.  When the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is engraved on every window of the car, it can be easily identified if stolen.  The presence of the numbers can avert a theft and many insurance companies will even offer discounts to clients who have VIN etching.

HIGH-TECH TOOLS

There are also many technological innovations that can be used in automobiles to prevent theft.  A simple one is to install an audible car alarm, which sounds a siren when the car is tampered with.  More sophisticated devices include vehicle tracking devices like OnStar or LoJack, which use radio or GPS systems to allow police to track a stolen vehicle.

Automobile theft is still a major problem today and will be for a long time.  A motivated criminal will always find a way to take a vehicle.  However, by employing several anti-theft techniques simultaneously, car owners can greatly improve the odds that their vehicle will remain safe and sound.
