Since the early 1990s, natural and man-made disasters have been striking America with increasing ferocity and frequency.  In California alone, there have been devastating earthquakes, fires, floods, mudslides, and the foil of terror at Los Angeles International Airport.  In Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, there have been Category 5 hurricanes.  In the Midwest, there have been devastating tornadoes and floods.

In each of these disasters, services such as electricity, water, gas, sewage treatment, and telephones often cease to work.  Depending on the severity of the situation, it may take hours and even days before help arrives.  The good news is that families and individuals can plan in advance for these types of emergencies by preparing a disaster supply kit that includes enough items needed for each family member to survive a minimum of three days.

The kit should be kept in an easy-to-carry, waterproof container, such as an unused trash can, a camping backpack, or a duffle bag.  Since a disaster can occur at anytime, there should be a kit at home, work, and in each vehicle that you own.  Review the contents of the kits every six months and update and replace items that are expired.  Your list of needs should also be updated every year to account for family changes.  The checklist above consists of the most basic items that each disaster supplies kit should include.  Additional items, such as prescriptions or baby formula, can be added based on individual needs.
