Whenever there is a transit or train bombing around the world, whether in Madrid, London, or in India, it sparks a widespread call for increased transit security in the United States, according to Homeland Security Stocks.com. Despite repeated warnings from transit advocacy groups and politicians there has been little progress in securing the nations transit facilities from the sort of attacks weve seen around the world. It certainly isnt because there is any lack of proposals or technology to beef up security in the nation? transit systems. Solutions abound, ranging from advanced video threat detection systems, to advanced explosives "sniffers" and innovative ID/credentialing and access control systems from a broad range of small, mid and large size companies including GE, Lockheed, American Science and Engineering and L-1 Identity. The problem has been in marshalling the political will to fund a full roll out of these technologies. Applying sophisticated solutions across the full range of transit systems of the United States could easily exceed by a factor of ten the total expenditures to date for securing the air transportation system. The large financial cost of an extensive transit security roll out would appear to be a bargain compared to the enormous costs from economic disruption that would occur following any large scale transit attacks. It is time to enable a pro-active solution that can put in place a realistic security program before what has been an international problem turns into a domestic disaster.
