Macaus economy is based largely on tourism, including gambling, and textile and garment manufacturing. Recent reports indicate that Macau’s annual revenues from gaming have already exceeded those of Las Vegas.  The clothing industry has provided about three-fourths of export earnings, and it is estimated that the gambling industry contributed more than 50% of GDP in 2005. The opening of the gambling sector in 2002 has led to significant investments in casinos, hotels, and related facilities by some of the world’s most notable companies. As a result, more than 22 million tourists visited Macau in 2006 with figures expected to rise in coming years.
