Federal government demand for managed security services will expand

U.S. federal agencies are struggling to find a balance between mission performance and complying with IT security mandates.

At the core of each agencys problem is the issue of implementing secure systems and being able to hire and retain skilled IT managers to manage the systems, according to a new report released by INPUT, the authority on government business. Because of an ever-tightening budget, agencies have had to compromise between mission performance and operating systems, often where they have little or no expertise; IT security is such an area. Now, as a way to alleviate the reliance on internal resources, INPUT expects agencies to be increasingly receptive to Managed Security Services.

"Costs, along with the inability to stay current with technologies, leaves agencies lagging in the area of IT security," said Chris Campbell, senior analyst, federal research with INPUT. "Adoption of Managed Security Services is expected to increase due to the fact that they provide agencies an affordable and practical way to meet mandatory compliance rules and obtain the necessary expertise they required in this complex area."

The report analyzes the prospects for managed security services in federal government and the benefits and risks agencies face in using managed security services.
