A Launch Pad for New Electronics Products and Technologies
Asia¡¯s two major electronics fairs, the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition) 2008 and electronicAsia 2008, were held from 13-16 October at the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre with a record 3,162 exhibitors and 4,500 booths.
QUALITY BUYERS
The HKTDC organized 100 missions representing 4,000 companies and 7,000 buyers from 68 countries and regions for the Electronics Fair, along with 39 missions of 1,000 companies and 1,500 buyers from 30 countries and regions for electronicAsia.
Among them, 45 percent are from new markets, including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine in Eastern Europe; Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru in Latin America; Iran, Lebanon, Syria and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East; and the Chinese mainland, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia.
They included buying representatives from a wide variety of consumer electronics brands, as well as leading chain stores and distributors, including: Australia¡¯s Target Australia Pty Ltd; Chile¡¯s Comercial Eccsa (Ripley) SA; France¡¯s Auchan; Germany¡¯s MGB Metro; India¡¯s Infiniti Retail Ltd; Italy¡¯s Melchoioni SPA; Japan¡¯s Joshin Denki; Korea¡¯s Daewoo Electronics; Poland¡¯s Manta Multimedia; Portugal¡¯s Sonae Distribucao; South Africa¡¯s Ellies Electronics; Spain¡¯s Alcampo, SA; Russia¡¯s Stopol Group; the UAE¡¯s Eros Group; and the US¡¯s Radio Shack.
CEASELESS GROWTH
The 28th Hong Kong Electronics Fair marked the largest electronics fair in Asia and the second largest in the world. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the fair brought together 2,600 exhibitors from 29 countries and regions. Among them were new exhibitors from the Czech Republic, France and the UAE.
Officiating at today¡¯s opening ceremony were: Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development; Fred Lam, Executive Director, HKTDC; Kurt Schraudy, Director, Business Unit for New Technologies, Messe Munchen GmbH; and Dr. Roy Chung, Chairman, the HKTDC¡¯s Electronics and Electrical Appliances Advisory Committee.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Chung noted that a new In-Vehicle Electronics and GPS Zone had been set up this year, reflecting the electronics fair¡¯s ability to respond rapidly to industry developments.
¡°For the first time, the exhibition has expanded into the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre in the China Resources Building. Here you will find car entertainment products and security devices, Bluetooth products, Global Positioning Systems and other navigational aids,¡± Dr. Chung said.
FAIR HIGHLIGHTS
Other theme areas included the Hall of Fame, housing 240 top-of-the-range brand names and stylish products from more than 180 exhibitors; the Technology Exchange Zone, featuring breakthrough concepts and prototypes with enormous potential for commercial development; Digital World, showcasing all manners of entertainment, imaging, communications and multimedia products; and Home Tech, where intelligent home appliances were on offer.
Fair highlights included the product demos and launch pad, where unique products and new technology were being presented by six exhibitors; and the 14 October HKEIA Award Presentation for Outstanding Innovation and Technology Products, which promoted new products with excellent design, technology and features.
CONCURRENT EVENT
Running in parallel with the fair was electronicAsia. Now in its 12th year, electronicAsia is the region¡¯s premier trade event for sourcing electronic components, assemblies, electronics production and display technology. This year, electronicAsia presented 562 exhibitors from 17 countries and regions, including new exhibitors from Hungary, the Philippines and Sweden. Three special zones, Hall of Fame, World of Display Technology and the Hong Kong Metal Parts and Components Pavilion, were set up for easy sourcing.
The electronicAsia show is jointly organized by MMI-Munich International Trade Fairs Ptd Ltd and the HKTDC.
