In the security industry, POSDATA was among the first to introduce stand-alone DVRs in Korea. The company has manufactured products with stability and reliability foremost in mind and thus been able to remain in the customers¡¯ mind as one of the best DVR producers, according to Sun-Chan Kim, Marketing Manager of POSDATA¡¯s DVR Business Dept. Jeanny Lim, Editor-in-Chief of SecurityWorld INT¡¯L, sat down with Kim to discuss trends in the DVR market and POSDATA¡¯s recent developments.

How would you like to describe Posdata?

 

Established in 1989 as a subsidiary of world-famous steelmaker POSCO, POSDATA has been one of Korea¡¯s comprehensive IT service providers.  POSDATA offers products and services to telecommunications and computing companies and has been focusing on creating the ubiquitous network by harnessing technologies of the future, including the mobile internet (Mobile WiMAX) and ETCS (Electronic Toll Collection System). 

In the security industry, POSDATA was among the first to introduce stand-alone DVRs in Korea and has been leading the high-end DVR market ever since.  Its technological capabilities and know-hows accumulated through its ten year experience in the DVR market give POSDATA ample strength to deal with the fierce competition in the market.

POSDATA has manufactured products with stability and reliability foremost in mind and thus been able to remain in the customers¡¯ mind as one of the best DVR producers.

Whats hot today among POSDATA products?

 

This year, we launched the N-DVR (Network DVR) system to the market.  As the IP-based network video surveillance market grows rapidly, POSDATA has put more focus on IP-based video technology adding products such as N-DVR to our already strong product line.

Furthermore, POSDATA has sufficient experience in providing IT services and owns the core technology of the WiBro (Wireless Broadband), a wireless broadband Internet technology developed by the South Korean telecoms industry, which gives us a competitive edge over our competitors in providing network video security solutions and services.

Where does POSDATA put its focus on this year, in terms of both business and technology development? 

 

This year we are going to put all of our efforts on developing new customers.  In the first half of the year we are debuting exciting new products and marketing them in security shows such as ISC West, SecuTech and IFSEC.  By adding economical DVRs to our product offering, we have expanded and diversified our product line, which has been dominated by high-end DVRs.  New sales generated from the economical DVR range are expected to help boost our growth this year.

Can you tell us about the international video security market and whether that is changing?  How do you see the market this year?

 

Today the competition in the video security market is cutthroat.  Quality standards are falling and technical expertise to distinguish between branded products and cheap imitations is quickly disappearing.  The market is crowded with many manufacturers with similar technologies and products.  The price competition will get more intense in the economical DVR market, while after-sales service, customizing capability and warranty will be the key attraction for high-end customers.

What in your opinion are some of the key technology trends in the video security industry?  What is POSDATA doing in this regard?

 

I think it is a little hard to identify technology trends in stand-alone DVR at this point.  Increase in number of frames and channels is no longer a competitive edge that can differentiate you from the herd of DVR manufacturers.  But video surveillance products that are network based and have advanced capabilities such as video analytics will grow fast, and POSDATA is making large investments in research and development of relevant technologies.
