RAE Systems Inc., a global provider of rapidly deployable sensor networks that enable customers to identify safety and security threats in real time, announced that Oak Ridge National Laboratory completed functional testing of RAE Systems¡¯ GammaRAE II R, a handheld integrated detector and dosimeter for gamma radiation. Performance tests included radiation response, environmental exposure, electromagnetic susceptibility, and mechanical ruggedness. All tests were done according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) criteria for alarming personal radiation detectors (PRD) used for homeland security applications.
¡°We have already seen adoption of our gamma and neutron personal radiation detectors and dosimeters by several states,¡± said Robert Chen, president and CEO for RAE Systems. ¡°The GammaRAE II R is designed to meet both the technical and safety needs of first responders and RAE Systems is proud to have their instruments validated by a national laboratory. Overall, the GammaRAE II R functioned properly for each test we performed,¡± according to Peter Chiaro, Ph.D., manager for characterization and technology support programs at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. ¡°Five GammaRAE II R instruments were tested for radiation response as well as environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical susceptibility. Tests performed were based on ANSI N42.33-2006 and sections 6.2, 6.3, and 6.5 of ANSI N42.32-2006.¡±
GammaRAE II R is both a detector and a dosimeter. The sensitive Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillation crystal of the GammaRAE II R provides a fast, two-second response to radiological threats, while the energy-compensated PIN diode provides high dose rate range coverage and accurate dose measurements. Thus the GammaRAE II R not only alerts the user to the presence of gamma radiation, but can also protect the user from over-exposure to radiation. The GammaRAE II R is the first personal radiation detector (PRD) to provide rapid detection of gamma-ray sources even in potentially flammable environments. Certified intrinsically safe and water-submersible for decontamination purposes, the GammaRAE II R can be used in more environments than any other personal radiation detector. GammaRAE II R alerts the user with a loud 85+ dB audible alarm, big, bright flashing LEDs, and a vibrating alarm. For stealth operations, law enforcement personnel can disable each alarm individually. The GammaRAE II R is available now from all certified RAE Systems distributors.
